The newly established Yusen Logistics Distribution Centre, the largest logistics facility in Wallonia and within GSK's global network, is set to commence operations in the first week of July, following a successful audit by the Belgian health authorities. Valued at €50 million, the centre can store up to 42,000 pallets, with flexible storage options facilitated by a 7,000 sqm cold room and a 700 sqm freezer compartment. Equipped with advanced technologies including automated mobile robots, self-driving vehicles, and sorting equipment, the facility will enable GSK to efficiently manage raw materials and distribute vaccines to over 160 countries. As a result, the centre will support the daily export of 1 million vaccine doses.

While the loading and unloading of goods will continue to be performed manually, the introduction of a goods-to-person process will significantly ease the workload for employees. This system allows for goods to be automatically picked by robots, eliminating the need for workers to move around. Additionally, high-capacity shuttle devices, automatic packaging systems, and sorting machines will be utilized.

Designed to meet the highest standards of environmental sustainability, the centre will be certified to the BREEAM* 'excellent' standard. It will be powered entirely by green energy, facilitated by solar panels covering the entire building and an intelligent energy management system. These sustainable measures align with GSK's goal of operating entirely on renewable electricity by 2025 and achieving a net positive impact on nature by 2030. Automated processes for road and sea transport, along with semi-automated preparations for air transport, will ensure shorter delivery times and greater flexibility to meet the needs of patients globally.

*BREEAM (or Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), method for evaluating the environmental performance of buildings, is the certification standard for the construction of a sustainable building.

"This new warehouse will transform our capacity to store and export millions of vaccines globally. It will enable us to distribute vaccines more swiftly to over 160 countries, while reducing our emissions by nearly 10,000 tonnes of CO2 by centralising various activities in one location. This critical project also demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the biopharmaceutical ecosystem in Belgium and establishing Wallonia as a logistics leader."
Emmanuel Amory
"This will be the largest pharmaceutical warehouse in the country and one of Europe's key hubs for vaccine distribution worldwide. This marks a significant milestone in our development in Wallonia, of which we are justly proud. Our goal is to convert more derelict sites in Wallonia into state-of-the-art warehouses, creating sustainable quality in an attractive and pleasant environment. Through these efforts, we will take a leadership role in Seraing by revitalizing three contaminated sites on ArcelorMittal's former blast furnace site."
Ignace De Paepe
"This state-of-the-art, multi-user pharmaceutical warehouse will set industry standards. It will become the new flagship pharmaceutical and medical logistics facility for Yusen in Europe. The facility is designed to meet a wide range of safety requirements for the pharmaceutical supply chain, offering storage and processing of products under various temperature conditions, from ambient to frozen solutions. Additionally, an on-site 'Packaging Solutions Centre' will ensure product integrity during transportation with a variety of passive packaging solutions suited to all types of transport. By leveraging our expertise and knowledge, we aim to provide GSK and other customers with unparalleled service in the global distribution of their products."
Bruno Jacques
"We welcome the establishment of this state-of-the-art logistics hub by GSK. As the largest employer in its sector with 9,000 employees, and one of the world's leading vaccine producers with its three major sites, GSK, through this new logistics hub, enhances the biopharmaceutical ecosystem in Wallonia and reinforces the region's logistics position."
Willy Borsus
